True Blue.

Black and blue salvia...
We slept in this morning, some of us a little longer than others... So in the quiet morning hours I sat out on the front porch without an annoying neighbor in sight and read my book. I'm reading "Last American Man" for the 6Th or 7Th time. A great book that makes you really evaluate yourself.... After an hour the sun was giving me a headache, so i decided to wander the garden. No seedlings yet from the sowing a few days previous. Shouldn't be long though with this insane weather we've had. Today's real feel is 110 degrees. But the more mature plantings are all doing quite well. I'm very happy with the turnout of this years garden expansion.
After taking a walk around i noticed a bird flapping its wings wildly over in a neighbors yard. I ignored it for a short bit but soon decided something was wrong and went to investigate. Sure enough a juvenile bird had its toe caught between two pieces of a metal wire fence. Once i freed him of that i could see that his injuries were bad. He had broken his leg in trying to escape in such an irreparable way...and had skinned his leg completely.
So what to do? Call your wild and wonderful daddy; "Set him free, he will survive"... And so I did. With a heavy heart i let him go in a thickly grown wall of brush at the end of the street so that the cats couldn't get to him. Lets hope we see a one legged bird in the dogwood next year.

I have found many a hurt bird in my lifespan. We have a wonderful wildlife preserve (back in Chicago) nearby and have taken many animals there... everthing from turtles to rabbits. You fill out a postcard with your address on it, and they eventually send you that postcard saying what became of the animal. Options are "died," "euthanized," or "released to the wild." It's fun!
