The "New Dawn"...

Today was a very busy day for the two of us... First on our way to breakfast a nice old man decided he would run into our car with his truck, then to say sorry he bought and ate breakfast with us. After that we went and rented a jack hammer and set to work tearing up the cement sidewalk that cuts from Oak St. to our front porch. Soon we will finally be able to put all of our pilfered bricks to good use... And for that i couldn't be more excited!

It took nearly all day to finish the sidewalk, but now that that's done all that's left to do is haul away 5 or 6 truck loads of cement... That part I'm not looking forward to, but i cant wait to be done so i can start playing around with brick patterns.

I also got a chance to get some thinking done while Stephen was going at it with the jack hammer. Sitting on the stairs next to me was my little potted rose from Connie's rose nursery up in Hartwood. Its got a tag reading "New Dawn". She and Steve were kind enough to give us this pretty little rose for free when we came to visit them at a plant sale last fall at the Lewis-Ginter Botanical Gardens. I've known them since i was 5 years old and they have always been great friends to my family, so i wasn't surprised at this kindness. So, I brought myself inside to do some research on my little rose. Turns out it's an old climber brought to the US around 1930. It light pink and grows 10-20 ft.

I had been planning on growing it along the picket fence we are about to install, but once I started searching out photos of the rose and stumbled on the above image, i knew i had to grow it up the side of the house in the same fashion. If only i had an old rusty metal barn, id try to grow it to look just the same. What a beautiful way to show off two lovely things; and old barn covered in New Dawn.
