Ive spent the majority of my time lately with my head up in the clouds, doing nothing but dreaming of the spring garden. But today while on an afternoon walk with Stephen and the dog, i had a thought... Ive spent so long hating winter. I guess for the last bit of it I'm going to start looking for winters beauty, rather than signs of the coming spring.
Most of the snow has melted, but in its wake is a terrible mess of mud. I cant walk through my yard without sinking a few inches into it... We've had a lot of wind today as well, but the weekend promises a little warmth and a trip to the mountains to celebrate it...
So in light of my recent change of heart towards winter, i thought I'd share a lovely photo from judemcconkey of some over wintering Queen Anne's Lace. Which also happens to be one of the first flowers I'm going to incorporate into my new front yard beds this spring. I bought the seed's last night and am anxiously awaiting their arrival.
Also known as "wild carrot", Daucus carota is a meter tall, ferny leaved, white flowering plant with such grace. It's grown wild in meadows and along street sides here my entire life. Just as beautiful in winter as it is while blooming mid-summer, I'll be happy to grow it for the first time myself this year...
My 26th birthday is only a couple off weeks away!

Good for you, looking for the beauty in winter. It's becoming increasingly difficult to do this here in Michigan. We've had a couple of really nice days here lately that are followed by major blizzards. :( My mind is on the garden as well. The picture you posted of the queen anne's lace is stunning. Mmmmmm. I love that plant: the featherly leaves, the doily-like head of the plant in bloom, the way it smells, and the way the flower curls up and dries out like in the picture. Gorgeous.
My birthday is March 12th and i am excited because ive asked everyone for dirt! or money for it at least. Im adding os many raised beds. basically around the perimeter of most of my yard.... lots of gardening to do,. I want to grow as much of my own food as i can this year... ive got such big plans. hopefully it all pans out. Many things luckily have been free, We got wood from a barn being torn down that we ripped, cut, and are building a fence from. We are cutting millions of pine saplings to build the raised beds, they tore down a historic old building down town and we collected the bricks for pathways and such! Im thrilled at the potential... I just bought most of my seeds and planted the early sowings in my guest room.....
I know how you feel about the snow though! im just trying to convince myself its ohk and that there is a bright side to the dreary season! Today we saw beautiful snow, a foot of it on the Appalachian trail. we hiked for a couple hours and it was fantastic. so many pretty mountain laurels still green! ill post pictures of that soon.
I am painfully in love with Queen Annes Lace. It makes me both happy and sad to see it growing wild on the sides of highways. People treat it like a weed, but I think it's definitely garden-worthy. Please post pictures of it growing in your garden this summer!
