Sod Roof...

Traditional Green Roof

When my mother was young and growing up in what is now my house, her father built a large garage/workshop in our backyard. He used whatever materials he could to put it together. Old roughly hewn cedar beams, scraps of wood, sheet metal...old wooden boxes.
I love that sort of thinking; you can do whatever you put your mind to... However, the garage is now in such disrepair im under the impression that its not only an eyesore, its also become unsafe.
This winter through spring, my husband, father, and I intend to repair and rebuild it into a space that can sometimes be used as a garage (if i hold onto my 1972 beatle), but that will most times serve as a woodworking shop. And what used to be my grandaddy's workshop (he was devoted to an antique Chevy Truck named Jezebel), will be rebuilt as my brand new green house. And i couldnt be happier about it.
Right now i havent any money for the project, as we are putting all available funds into rebuilding our 1950's kitchen... But I am beginning the research to find if a sod roof is a plausable feat... something we can undertake with much elbow grease and minimal funding.
I am, and have been for some time, facinated with the idea of a living roof... Of replaceing some of the displaced greenery on my small bit of land. Trust me, if the funds were available I'd have my entire house done with a sod roof.... But those are notions of dreamland....
